Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga were once close confidants up to shortly after 2007 general elections.
The two top politicians had a nasty fall out and their rivalry has been open to everyone as their allies continue to engage in an exchange of harsh words.
Although Odinga has not hinted on whether he will be contesting for the presidential seat in 2022, chances are high that he will be in the ballot. DP Ruto's presidential bid is on the contrary clear as the self-proclaimed hustler will be on a mission to succeed his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This will be a tough contest and it is the reason for the ongoing debates between Raila and Ruto's allies to the extent that Siaya senator James Orengo has threatened to table a motion to impeach the second in command.
Raila knows that he will easily lose an election without the support of the vote-rich Rift Valley region where the DP hails from as witnessed in the 2013 and 2017 elections .
DP Ruto is currently perceived to be the Rift Valley’s kingpin and he has the support of a majority of residents from his home region who have maintained that their son should rise to the presidency.
Raila is jealous of Ruto's supremacy in his home region and is trying so hard to dilute the popularity of the man who draws his roots to Sugoi village in Uasin Gishu county.
