Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has said farmers will reap big in green grams' farming as the national government joins to promote the crop to be a model one in the county.

Kibwana said his administration will construct Makindu grains processing facility to add value to their produce.

"We are now focusing on grain processing with plans to construct the Makindu grain processing facility to add value to pulses and enable farmers be able to access both local and export market," Kibwana said.

He spoke during the Makueni Farmers Field Day at Kenya Plant Health Inspection services (KEPHIS) in Kwa Kathoka on Thursday.

Kibwana said due to the national government and other development partners' support, the land covered by pulses such as cowpeas, dolichos, green grams and beans in Makueni County has increased upto 255,432 hectares with an estimated cost of Sh8 billion.

The event was organised by the Makueni county government in partnership with Kenya Plant Health Inspection services (KEPHIS).

Agriculture Principal Secretary Hamadi Boga who presided over the event, on his part, said the county will be given a chance to pick on model crop that his ministry will promote through farmer capacity, marketing, and other value linkages to increase profitability.
