Nairobi Senator Johnstone Sakaja has condemned the outcome of Kasarani demonstrations that left scores died an others injured.
Writing on Thursday Twitter, the senator said that it is saddening that lives were lost during the incident. He also revealed that the government had swung into action to ensure the road is repaired with immediate effect.
“It is unfortunate that we had to lose lives in Kasarani. Brought together the area leadership, the matatu SACCOS, the security agencies and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority and made sure the situation is normalized. The contractor is on-site as we speak and operations are on,” he said.
Residents of Kasarani took to the streets from Monday to Thursday in protest over the poor state of Mwiki-Kasarani road. They blocked some roads and burnt litter leading to inaccessibility to the area.
In attempts to quell the demonstrations, the police in the area were forced to fire teargas and bullets to disperse the residents resulting in casualties.
Sakaja said that the national government has already allocated Sh.1.7 billion towards the construction of the roads in the area. He called upon the county government of Nairobi to join the national government in ensuring that it sets aside funds for the construction of the roads in the area.
“We have also received commitment for an extra 1.7b from the National Government to sort out other roads in Nairobi that are in a poor state following the rains. The Nairobi County Government must also step in and address the roads within their mandate,” he tweeted.
