Speaking on Tuesday in Mbooni, Maalim admitted that some areas in the county were glaring at starvation.

He observed that the government will conduct a spot check and ensure the affected areas get food.

The County Commissioner noted that the affected areas include Kikumbulyu, Malinda Nguumo, Kitise Nguu, Masongaleni, Kasikeu, Mtitu Andri, Kalama among others.

He said crops from last season didn't do well thus contributing to the imminent drought.

Maalim, however, disclosed that no single person has lost his life due to starvation in the county.

"As the government, we plan to offer assistance of food to areas affected by drought in the county," he assured and also urged other devolved systems to come on board and help.

"The county government and other devolved bodies should chip in and help. We should not always leave the burden to the national government," he added.

According to Maalim, over 290 public primary schools with over 77,000 pupils in the county are under the government feeding programme and will continue to receive food.

He also said that the over 30,000 senior citizens in the county are benefiting from Inua Jamii program.

Makueni is among the 13 counties facing drought.

The national government has already set aside Sh2 billion to counter drought.
