Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has criticised Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, accusing him of disrespecting BestLady Cosmetics.
According to Mwangi, Joho contracted someone to pour trash outside all three BestLady shops in Mombasa after the shop successfully barred the County Government of Mombasa from painting its shops.
Joho's administration suffered a set-back on June 12, after the High Court in the coastal city dismissed an order by the County government, to have all residential and commercial buildings in the Central Business District (CBD) painted Egyptian-blue and white.
The public notice was issued to residents by the county administration, directing that all buildings be painted with a uniform colour to symbolize the Indian Ocean.
However, BestLady Cosmetics rushed to the court and petitioned the order, arguing that the directive interferes with the company's freedom of doing business.
Through laywer Samuel Kariuki, BestLady cosmetics said it will lose its popularity if all of its branches in the CBD are painted with a uniform colour.
Mombasa High Court Judge Erick Ogolla further dismissed the directive after the county government of Mombasa failed to respond to the case.
Governor Hassan Joho's administration has now punished the shop by failing to collect trash outside their branches in Mombasa.
The trash was left after the county administration embarked on a beautification process targeting to clean-up the city and renovate pavements.
"So Governor Hon. Ali Hassan Joho ordered all buildings to be repainted, one company, Bestlady, resisted and went to court because their brand is pink. Joho pulled a weak, childish move and contracted someone to pour trash outside all three Bestlady shops in Mombasa. Tabia za Kijinga," Mwangi said on Friday.
