The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Communications Philip Etale has lashed out at controversial Bishop David Kariuki Ngari after details emerged of how he allegedly plundered money belonging to members of the troubled Ekeza Savings and Credit Cooperative Society.
The ODM spokesperson said it was ironical that Ngari, famously known as Gakuyo, stole money yet he is expected to preach against the vice in his TV shows and at his Thika-based church.
"A man of God Bishop Gakuyo through real estate and Ekeza Sacco moved Sh1.5B from Ekeza account to his personal account. According to the Auditor's report, only he and his wife could access the money. Surely, the true story of Preaching WATER and Drinking WINE. Hujuma!" Etale tweeted on Thursday.
The Raila Odinga-led party boss said there was a need for Kenyans to do their due diligence before joining any Sacco since most of them are out to steal their hard earned savings.
"Ekeza Sacco saga: Lesson to Kenyans, please join existing, established and known SACCOS if you want to invest and grow," he noted.
Commenting on the same issue, Reverend Geoffrey Njenga condemned the act of preachers engaging in vices such as theft, adding there was a need to 'vet' church ministers.
"We need professional people to run the church and that is a given. It is not very wise for the church to be a place where anybody who has failed everywhere then comes there," said Njenga, a lecturer at Multimedia University.
