The incident comes after the officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) identified Gilgil and Naivasha as the main sources of the meat.

The traders often transport the meat to Burma Market where it is consumed on a large scale. The detectives have since arrested three people and a trader, who hails from Naivasha in connection to the sale of the meat.

The police officers arrested the suspects after storming Marula farm, which is located a few meters away from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The suspects were using a personal car to ferry the meat before they were nabbed.

Central Rift Region boss Aggrey Maumo confirmed the incident, noting that cases of traders selling game meat have become rampant in Naivasha.

He warned those engaging in the trade that their days are numbered, adding that detectives have embarked on a probe to determine the syndicate behind the trade.

Maumo further said that more suspects will be arrested and charged in court in connection to the illegal trade.

“Our intelligence indicates that majority of the game meat that finds its way in Burma market is sourced from Naivasha and Gilgil and we are keen to contain this,” he said, as quoted by the Standard.
