Deputy President William Ruto has thrown his weight behind the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report since its good for him, political analyst Ambrose Weda now says.
The DP, who has been opposed to the entire BBI issue right from its formation, appears to have dropped his hard stand, alongside his allies under the Tangatanga faction of Jubilee Party.
Weda says that while this might be seen as a change of tact, it's not, as the DP has only been pushing for what favours his 2022 presidential bid, which he might have been seen in the BBI report.
Speaking on Wednesday, he observed that this is explained by the fact that Ruto only threw his weight behind the report after seeing it, after months of expressing discomfort in it.
"This is not a change of tact, it depends on the content of the BBI. It appears that the report is good for him as a presidential aspirant for the 2022 elections," he said.
The High Court advocate made the remarks on KBC English Service's The Big Conversation on Wednesday.
He said that in his view, Ruto appears relieved that the report did not propose an expansion of the executive, which was one of the amendments he has been opposed to.
According to him, the document will make things even better for the DP should he make it to the top, given that it even allows him to pick the Prime Minister if implemented.
"Initially, there were alleged plans that it would create more seats which incited Ruto's allies and the team appears to have detected opposition and retreated. Now it even gives him more powers to even appoint the Prime Minister," he added.
The DP has also dropped his hard stand on the implementation of the document, hinting that he is ready for a referendum, after initially insisting that it must be through the parliament.
