Retired President Daniel Moi is still active in Kenyan politics, 18 years after his retirement, ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire has said.
Mzee Moi has been in and out of hospital for the past two years, with the latest coming last week when he was admitted at Nairobi Hospital.
In an exclusive phone interview on Saturday, the former Kitutu Masaba MP said Mzee Moi often gives President Uhuru Kenyatta counsel on serious government matters.
According to him, Moi played a key role in uniting President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga after the acrimonious 2017 polls.
"The old man is still active and talks to the president often. He somehow runs the show despite his old age," noted Mr Bosire, a close ally of Raila Odinga.
He further said: "You can imagine that even the handshake, Mzee Moi is much aware about it. He worked closely with the two to ensure that peace was achieved."
The handshake between the two caught the country by surprise, a move that has made lieutenants from both sides trade barbs for many months now.
Moi's youngest son Gideon Moi has been working closely with former premier Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta, an indication that his family was much aware of the handshake.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga have separately visited Mzee Moi with the latest public trip coming on May when the nonagenarian lost his eldest son Jonathan.
Uhuru was first introduced into national politics in 2001 when Moi asked late Mark Too to withdraw from Parliament in support of the young Kenyatta.
