When he was recently transferred to Nyamira, Mr Amos Mariba knew that his output will be measured based on his ability to tackle crimes and execute government orders.

Mr Mariba, a former cop, despite assuming the duties of County Commissioner, he knew that his new work station would be monitored given that it's the backyard of Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i.

At national level, Dr Matiang'i has been undoubtedly one of the best performing ministers. Back at his backyard, Matiang'i has been battling cattle theft, gambling and illicit brew business.

But last week, a number of brewers came out to protest against what they called harassment from authorities, arguing that brewing is their economic business.

"We shall not allow Matiang'i and his officers to destroy our businesses. We use the income for educating our children. We are going to curse him," one of the brewers, Pamela Nyerere argued.

And the man behind successful crackdown against illicit brewers is Mr Mariba, who has also made life difficult for gamblers in the county.

The career civil servant is in a number of local WhatsApp groups where he shares latest security reports with locals. In return, some of them make other requests for action.

"Illicit brews are petty crimes but they create an environment for other crimes and anti social behaviors to thrive. We encourage the Brewer's to seek for alternative sources of income. Currently, the government has many devolved funds which can incubate their business if they form groups.e.g:NGAAF,WEF,YF,Uwezo fund," read one of his messages on Saturday on Kitutu Masaba Forum.

"Please, give me further information on the cases defilement in my in- box. Defilement is a serious crime which can lead to a jail punishment for life imprisonment. Let's all be a solution to our problems and not bystanders or are you suggesting that we should not arrest brewers and drug peddlers?" he added.

Along the notorious Sotik-Borabu border, cattle theft has significantly reduced. Unlike in the past, locals can now afford sleep thanks to beefed up security.

Recently, police were able to trace and recover cows stolen from John Matiang'i's home, the brother to Dr Matiang'i and current KNUT Treasurer.

"These cases have reduced. Sometimes back, we never used to sleep. We have been holding village barazas and a number of suspected thieves have been warned," admitted John Kerongo.
