A Deputy Principal to a top school is nursing serious injuries at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) following an accident near Kemera market on Wednesday evening.
Albert Mochama, the Deputy Principal Nyakemincha Secondary School was in the company of two others at the time of the accident and was reportedly on the steering wheel.
His brother, Charles Mochama, a former gubernatorial candidate in Nyamira who finished second in 2013, said the principal was rushed to KTRH for emergency medication.
"Albert Mochama Deputy Principal Nyakemincha Secondary is out of danger but in severe pain in level five now in Kisii County. Very sorry and sad the other co-driver died on the spot our condolences to the family," said Mochama in a short statement.
Eyewitnesses said the car was speeding before ramming into a truck with the man sitting on the co-driver's seat dying on the spot while the other passenger succumbing to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
"The car was being driven at a ridiculous speed. The driver lost control and rammed into another truck moving towards the same direction. One person died on the spot," said Walter Omari, an eyewitness.
Police in charge of payroll at the route Nicholas Wambua confirmed the incident and said officers were investigating the real cause of the accident despite preliminary investigation showing that the three were drunk.
"We cannot speculate. Perhaps we give it time. Drivers should exercise caution during this festive season. We can't continue losing people through careless driving," he said.
