Siaya Governor Cornel Amoth Rasanga was once forced to flee when a rival group of youths clashed during his tour of Yala township in Gem Constituency.
Governor Rasanga was evacuated to safety as gunshots rent the air in Yala, on June 17, 2015.
The Business Today reported that governor Rasanga was scheduled to address a public rally in Yala town before he was met with a hostile group of youths, allegedly allied to his then fierce critic, former Gem Member of Parliament (MP) Jakoyo Washington Midiwo.
Trouble started after a youth attempted to grab the microphone from the governor, prompting his aides to move in swiftly.
Police officers were forced to fire in the air to disperse the youth as the governor was driven away to safety.
Rasanga and Midiwo were entangled in turf wars, with the latter vowing to ensure the governor is not re-elected. However, Midiwo’s mission to ensure that Rasanga is not elected failed after the governor was elected for the second and last term last year.
Governor Rasanga, defending his seat on an ODM ticket defeated former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo who was an independent candidate.
Midiwo lost the MP seat after being defeated by the current MP Elisha Odhiambo in both ODM party primaries and the August 8th, 2018 general elections.
