Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has sent his condolences to residents of West Pokot following landslides tragedy that hot the region on Friday night.

West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello said Saturday morning that the death toll is at 24, with search and rescue ongoing.

According to him, bodies of seven children and five adults have been recovered as the rescue team intensified operations.

On his Twitter account, Lusaka said: "Deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the West Pokot landslide. Our thoughts and prayers during these trying times."

Reports indicate that some of the areas affected include Tamkal Secondary School in which boys dorm was swept away.

A bridge at Chapera has also been swept away. Penon, Nyarkulian in Pokot South constituency is said to be affected heavily.

Cases of landslides are common in North Rift with many cases often recorded in West Pokot and the neighbouring Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

In October, government spokesperson Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna confirmed that at least 29 people had been swept by floods due to heavy downpour across the country.
