Murkomen, who visited the area on Sunday, observed that security agencies have been deployed to help in the ongoing rescue operation and hailed Uhuru for the expeditious action.

The Senate Majority Leader further asked Kenyans of goodwill to donate to the victims of the tragedy which has so far claimed the lives of 50 citizens.

"The Government led by the President has responded well to this tragedy through a multi-agency team. We have urged the people to leave the escarpment for safer grounds. Let’s continue supporting them by making any donations to help the victims including those who will be relocated," he tweeted.

In a statement on Saturday, the President described the West Pokot tragedy as 'devastating' noting it led to the loss of lives and massive destruction of property including key infrastructures such as roads and bridges.

He said the landslide was triggered by the heavy rains that are being experienced in most parts of the country.

"In the meantime, I have directed the deployment of resources including rescue personnel from our various security and humanitarian agencies covering the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service and Special Programmes to the affected region so as to provide mitigative action against further loss of lives. The operation will continue round the clock until the situation normalizes," Uhuru said.
