Powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday represented President Uhuru Kenyatta in Mozambique, where regional Head of States had gathered.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is currently in Kingston, Jamaica for an official tour upon invitation by Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Kenya-Jamaica ties are among top issues being discussed.
At Maputo, Dr Matiang'i represented Kenya, a key partner in Southern Africa Development Community, which is playing a key role in brokering deal in Mozambique.
President Felipe Nyusi visited Kenya earlier this year where he was hosted by Uhuru. He also visited the Makonde community at the Coast, which has roots in Mozambique.
Dr Matiang'i on Tuesday shared platform with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Paul Kagame, both who were tasked by SADC along with Uhuru to restore peace in the country.
"As a sign of solidarity with the people of Mozambique, a delegation from Kenya and I had the privilege of witnessing the signing of a peace deal between President Filipe Nyusi and RENAMO leader, Ossufo Momade, in Maputo as the country closes a long chapter of political conflict.l," Matiang'i wrote.
Both Nyusi and opposition leader Momade have been at loggerheads, with their rivalry threatening to break the country apart. Mozambique is recovering from Cyclone that killed thousands of people.
Earlier, Dr Matiang'i was hosted by his counterpart Jaime Monteiro, the Interior Minister where the two discussed bilateral interests between Kenya and Mozambique.
"I was hosted by Mozambique Minister of the Interior, Jaime Monteiro, in Maputo where we discussed diverse issues of bilateral interest between our two countries, among the combating transnational organized crime," he added.
President Uhuru Kenyatta elevated Dr Matiang'i to chair of powerful Communication and Implementation cabinet committee, which is tasked to monitor projects.
