Eldoret is the headquarter of Uasin Gishu county. It is one of the oldest towns in Kenya which was established by the colonial government. A majority of the town's occupants are from the Kalenjin community though there are several other communities that also live within the town, and are in a sizeable number.

Here are a few facts you should know about Eldoret town;

Agricultural hub

Eldoret is known for being a centre of agriculture and trade. The town is surrounded with large-scale farmers both for cereals produce (maize and wheat) and livestock (milk). The town is therefore full of agricultural products most popular being the fermented milk, known as Mursik y the Kalenjin community.

Population

Eldoret is the fourth populated town in Kenya with a population of 218,446 people behind Nairobi which leads by 2,750,547 people followed closely by Mombasa which has a population of 799,668 people and the third position is taken by Nakuru which has the population of 259,903 people.

'The Home of Champions'

A majority of prominent Kenyan athletes trace their home to Eldoret town from the legend Kipchoge Keino, Ezekiel Kemboi, Vivian Cheruiyot, Eliud Kipchoge and Nicholas Bett who died recently.

Religion

The main religion among Eldoret locals is Christianity. However, there are few Islamic, Hindu and indigenous religions. Christianity accounts for about 82 per cent of the Uasin Gishu county’s population.
