A section of local elders from Garissa County has said that it will no longer accept refugees from neighbouring Somalia and even Sudan in the future.
The elders said they were a worried lot over political instability in neighbouring war-torn Somalia, saying it might extend to the country.
The elders drawn from the border towns of Dadaab and Liboi said the apparent interference of President Mohamed Farmajo and the upcoming elections in federal states has led to security lapses along the border.
Addressing the media in Garissa on Wednesday morning after a two-hour meeting, the council of elders led by Muhamed Dekow said they will never accept to host any other group of foreign refugees in their land owing to massive degradation that the region is yet to recover from.
“The land in and around Dadaab refugee camps is bare and can no longer sustain any livelihoods. For now, we are working with UN agencies to restore the environment back and a thought of possible refugees in the near future sends cold chills down our spines,” added Dekow.
