President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga are set to return to Kisumu for the fifth time jointly in a span of 12 months.
Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o on Thursday said the two leaders will officiate the opening of newly renovated Kisumu port on Tuesday next week.
The government started renovations worth Sh3 billion last year and the president has visited the facility a couple of times.
Governor Nyong'o, a close advisor of Mr Odinga, termed the opening of the port "a great win to the people of Kisumu".
"H.E the President of the Republic Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta and Rt. Hon @RailaOdinga are set to preside over the official launch of Kisumu Port next week Tuesday, January 14th, 2020. A big win to the great people of Kisumu," he tweeted.
The project is one of those associated with the handshake between the two leaders, who faced each other in two presidential elections.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director Daniel Manduku had in November confirmed the trip. However, he said he was not aware whether Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Tanzania’s Pombe Magufuli and Felix Tshisekedi of DRC would attend the relaunch.
The port is expected to be a gateway to Central Africa and the Great Lakes region, with goods expected to be transported across Lake Victoria.
On Saturday next week, the two leaders are also expected to join Western Kenya leaders at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega for BBI debate.
