The police in Mombasa are investigating an incident where a prison warden from Shimo la Tewa Prison shot an inspectorate officer working at the Mombasa county government on Tuesday evening.
Patrick Omondi was allegedly shot by Samuel Mwita as he controlled traffic at Buxton, before being rushed to Coast Province General Hospital where he was treated and discharged after the bullet penetrated through his ear and neck.
Coast Regional commander Johnston Ipara told the press that Mwita misused his firearm and that investigations have commenced into the incident.
Speaking at the Kenya School of Government on in Mombasa, Ipara warned officers against misusing their firearms, saying Mwita will face the full force of the law.
"We are about to conclude the investigation. No police officer will interfere with the probe. Justice must be delivered," he said on Wednesday.
According to the Mombasa County Inspectorate Director Mohammed Amir the warden committed a traffic offence by trying to pass over the pavement during rush hour, only to turn hostile after being asked.
Amir said Mwita punched Omondi after his pathway was blocked for committing a traffic offence before brandishing his gun and shooting Omondi.
"The public started lynching him before he grabbed our female officer and used her as a shield. She was hurt. Action should be taken against him," said Amir.
