He may be a political debutante in politics but Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki is operating like a veteran who has been in the game for decades. In short, he has mastered the game very fast as he aims to fight for his own political space in the region.
For a man who ‘emerged from nowhere’ to stun the veterans in the 2017 senatorial race, that could be a sign of good things to come in future. And going forward, he seems to understand what to do at the right time.
Over the past few months, the University of Nairobi-trained lawyer seems to be very careful with every step he takes that may handicap his quest to be a political force in the region.
As Deputy President William Ruto started to make forays into the region especially after the March 9, handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga, Faki is one of the politicians allied to Raila’s ODM party that attended the DP’s functions.
He remained tight-lipped on his political game plan. But as the ground seemingly became hostile amid ODM’s threat to discipline those who had declared that they would support Ruto, he made a hasty retreat and went back into the Orange party fold. He was conspicuously present the party held a retreat in Mombasa in June.
Senator Faki is the man to watch in Mombasa going forward.
