On September 16, 2019, Hivisasa highlighted a case of sewage spillage in Kisii town. The spillage affected the Kisii hospital roundabout area, something that inconvenienced traders and residents.
It is important to note that Kisii is faced with an ineffective sewer system that dates back to the colonial era.
Hivisasa Kisii based writer Geoff Gichana covered the story. The writer was tipped off by bodaboda riders whose their stage is in the area.
The spillage had been ongoing on for about five days, exposing the locals to diseases such as Cholera.
After covering the story, the traders and boda boda operators held peaceful protests calling on the relevant authorities to take immediate action.
They accused the authorities of laxity in managing the Kisii town sewer system. After the story was published, the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company (GWASO) officers pledged to take action.
GWASCO blamed owners of buildings in the area for not putting in place proper measures to control sewage. After five days, GWASO managed to send officers to the area and fixed the situation.
To fix the sewer line, the building owners were summoned and asked to ensure shops are closed to control the situation.
The Municipal Director Mengo Ochwang noted that for future control of the sewer system, building owners need to work with GWASO.
