International organisation AstraZeneca has taken taken a keen focus in Kibera in an effort to fight bad habits that affect people's health.
Already 40 peer educators have received training from AstraZeneca to fight such habits as smoking, harmful use of alcohol, lack of exercise, poor diet and other habits that lead to non-communicable diseases in the sunset of life.
The global, science-led biopharmaceutical organization basically focusses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines.
According to AstraZeneca Chief financial officer Marc Dunoyer, their strategy is to drive access to healthcare, and prevention of such diseases through behaviuor change in young people.
“NCDs such as diabetes, cancer, heart and respiratory conditions are now attacking young people interrupting lives, breaking apart families, eroding communities and threatening the development of nations,” he says.
The programme’s objectives are in tandem with Kenya’s Vision 2030 that gives priority to preventive care at the community and household levels.
