He said the amount being proposed through the valuation roll is very high and unrealistic and none can manage to pay.

“The county government proposed the new valuation role without involving both the County assembly and residents. A 600 per cent increment in land rates is unrealistic and needs to be looked into that wahy as County Assembly we rejected the process,” said the Huruma MCA.

Chomba spoke to the press in Eldoret on Thursday.

“We know the county government needs to look for funds to run its errands but surely someone who was paying Sh2,000 annually now is supposed to pay Sh 30,000? The increase should be there but should be affordable,” added the Jubilee allied MCA.

He further said the valuation roll is a negotiated document that needs public input before anything is done.

Chomba called on the county government of Uasin Gishu to conduct fresh mapping citing that where one owned 20 acres of land 18 years ago, one now owns two acres since he or she has subdivided and sold the plots.

He noted that the exercise was conducted based on the previous mapping which was done 20 years ago.
