Shock has engulfed Embu Prison after an inmate, Silas Kirimi, who had been sentenced to life in prison killed himself inside the facility.
The inmate, who had been sentenced to life after being found guilty of robbery with violence, is alleged to have hanged himself using his clothes on Thursday night under unclear circumstances.
Reports from NTV, however, indicate that the inmate had a confrontation with another inmate a few hours before he died.
It is alleged that the deceased may have committed suicide in order to avoid further confrontation.
The late is alleged to have committed the crime that landed him in jail at Kangeta in Igembe South, Meru County.
He was jailed at a Meru prison from 2013 and was transferred to the Embu prison in 2016.
Further reports have revealed that although the late was recognized as a calm person, he would occasionally get very temperamental. He would use special drugs to calm down.
The body of the deceased was taken to Embu mortuary.
County police commander Daniel Rukunga has confirmed, that officers have launched an investigation into the case.
This is however not the first incident of suicide being reported in prison.
On October 1, 2019, Daily Nation reported a story of a 27-year-old who hanged himself using a mattress cover at the Kibos Maximum Security Prison.
“According to the prison reports, he had also not shown any signs of being disturbed or being depressed,” Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu commented on the incident.
