One of the owners of the 8-storey building that collapsed in Malindi on Friday has surrendered to the office of the Directorate of the Criminal Investigation in Malindi.
Addressing the press in his office, Malindi DCIO Anthony Sunguti said that Shabbirali Fakhruddin has recorded a statement with DCI detectives and that he will be taken to court on Tuesday.
Sunguti added that his detectives were following up the names of the engineers Fakhruddin provided while he was being interrogated.
He added, “we are holding one of the directors who is also the owner of the structure. He will help us ascertain if the building was cleared by relevant government bodies to go on and if they had the correct documents.”
Fakhruddin who went missing since the incident happened, on Friday, told the detectives that he received the news of the collapsing of his building while in Mombasa, adding that he was shocked by the bad news hence switching off his cell phone immediately.
Sunguti said that due to the sensitivity and complexity of the matter, the DCI needs more time to carry out a thorough investigation that will ascertain the kind of crimes committed by each individual involved in the whole issue.
