Kibera residents have reacted differently to the government's decision to merge the Kenya Police and the Administration Police units.
Majority of residents argue that the merger is okay and will enhance service delivery in the force.
In an interview on Friday, the residents said that it will be easier for police to coordinate their activities under the new merger.
The residents also argued that conflict that is often witnessed between Kenya police and Administration police will be a thing of the past.
“I think the merger is okay in terms of enhancing service delivery to Kenyans,” Alfred Mbatia, a resident in Ngumo market said.
He said that the newly formed General Duty Police Unit will be more aggressive in the fight against crime and keeping law and order.
“President Kenyatta did what many Kenyans were praying for by merging the Kenya police and Administration Police,” Alicia Akinyi said.
Akinyi, a vegetable vendor at Ngumo market, said that Kenyans should now expect efficiency in service delivery among the police.
Ken Ondieki, a resident in Kibera, also lauded the move noting that it was good for Kenyans.
He said that merging the two police units will also save on tax.
However, a section of Kibera residents say that the police merging means nothing.
“The merge means nothing because they (police) are the same inefficient people being put together,” Alex Aluvara said.
Mr Aluvra said that the police force needs serious reforms and not merging.
“The president should have pushed for an end to corruption and not merging police units,” he added.
The residents also criticized the new uniforms the government has introduced for the new General Police Unit.
The locals say that the uniforms do not represent anything about Kenya and Kenyans.
“I think they should have been patriotic and picked on colors that reflect our diversity as Kenyans,” Sharon Masitsa said.
She said that the new uniform is ugly and does not speak anything about Kenyans.
