President Uhuru Kenyatta has on Friday announced the creation of a new state department.

The commander-in-chief of the armed forces formed the State Department for Interior and Citizens Services following the merger of ministries on Interior and the National Treasury. 

In the Executive Order No. 6 of 2019, announced that the new department is expected to discharge the duties of the two departments. 

Uhuru, who is completing his second and final term in power, also announced the merger of the departments of Irrigation and Water and Sanitation. 

The combination of the departments led to the formation of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation as the government seeks to streamline service provision.

The head of State renamed the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation to Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

The National Treasury has been assigned the budget and policy strategy function previously domiciled in the Office of the President (OP).

The Kenya South Sudan Liaison Services has now been taken over by the Ministry of East African Community and Regional Development while Public Service Performance Management has been designated to the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender under the new structure of government.

“To strengthen the efficacy of delivering the mandate of the Executive Office of the President, to direct and co-ordinate functions of Ministries and State Departments, the functions and ancillary institutions set out hereinafter are transferred from the Executive Office of the President to various Ministries and State Departments,” read a statement from State House.

Uhuru said that the changes will be implemented with immediate effect after the unveiling.
