A police constable in Taita Taveta has been arrested for shooting dead a man in a night club.
Constable David Gitahi is reported to have killed the middle-aged man on Friday night at Rockland Pub in Taveta Town.
Confirming the incident, Taveta divisional police commander Lawrence Maroa said the officer admitted to having been drunk at the time of the incident.
However, the constable told his bosses that he shot the deceased because he was among the robbery suspects who had killed a Flying Squad officer on Monday.
The Flying Squad officer was shot dead during a shootout with armed robbers who are believed to be behind a series of robbery cases reported in Mombasa.
The police commander further revealed that the constable had shot the victim in the chest three times with his service pistol.
“According to the witnesses, there was no argument. He just shot him saying he was a robbery suspect. We are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident,” said Mr Maroa, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The constable was arrested and is being held at the Taveta Police Station as police launch investigations into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Taveta Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
