James Mukangi Kimani was on Monday sentenced to three years in prison by a Nakuru court after he pleaded guilty to slaughtering a cat and selling the meat, contrary to the Foods, Drugs and Chemical substances act.

Mukangi who confessed being in the business for close to six years and selling the meat to samosa traders within Nakuru town for Sh500 was also charged for slaughtering in an undesignated place after he was arrested skinning the cat in an open field opposite the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.

According to Weda, however, Mukangi should not be demonized for the same, noting that there is nothing wrong with consuming the meat, adding that his major crime was to sell it to unsuspecting buyers.

''There is nothing wrong with eating a cat, actually, in some parts of the world, it is loved so he should not be demonized for that. His only mistake was to sell it to people without their knowledge,'' said the lawyer on KBC English Service on Wednesday.

In an agreement, a fellow panelist and advocate George Kithi said that the sentence handed to Kimani is too harsh as compared to the convict's crime.

''The sentence is too long since the only issue is that the meat wasn’t inspected,'' he said.

Mukangi's story became a trending top as Kenyans were shocked by the bizarre incident.
