The fight against cancer in Garissa County has been boosted after 60 medical staff from its sub-counties were subjected to a two-day training that ended on Thursday.
According to Garissa County Cancer Control Program Coordinator Fatuma Abubakar, the training was necessary so as to equip the staff with skills to handle the early diagnosis of cancer.
Abubakar noted that the Department of Health will work hand in hand with National Cancer Institute of Kenya, Getrudes Children Hospital and the Kenya Childhood Cancer Trust on an initiative to improve pediatric oncology services within Garissa County hospitals.
She further divulged that the samples will be tested by the partners as they await the completion of the Garissa County cancer centre.
"Samples will be taken for free and taken for testing to our partners until the County completes the on-going project of a fully-fledged cancer centre in Garissa County," she said.
Abubakar also appealed to the residents to visit health facilities for cancer screening in a bid to control the disease through early diagnosis.
Garissa County is among counties that have taken a major step in equipping the health facilities that are used to fight cancer.
Cancer which is now among the leading killer diseases in Kenya has robbed many lives in the past few months.
Former Kibra MP Ken Okoth, Bob Collymore (Safaricom CEO) and Joyce Laboso (Bomet Governor) succumbed to the disease in July.
