A 29-year-old man who was found guilty of killing his father was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Mathayo Lukavilo Sifuna is alleged to have murdered his father using a hoe on April 27, 2016 after an altercation at their home in Lukembe village, Kakamega North sub-county.
According to a report by The Standard Media, the accused is reported to have been digging near his house when his father, Francis Okonga Yeswa, confronted him and instructed him to stop citing that the ground upon which he was digging did not belong to him.
Consequently, a heated altercation erupted between the two. It is during the altercation that Lukavilo allegedly hacked his father to death using a hoe. Efforts to save Okonga who was rushed to the hospital were fruitless as he passed on.
The accused nonetheless pleaded for leniency when he appeared before High Court Judge Jesse Njagi. According to the judge, he put into consideration the time that the accused had already spent behind while delivering his ruling.
“The accused killed his father by inflicting a serious injury on his head after a quarrel. After considering all the circumstances of the case, mitigation of the accused and the time spent in custody pending trial, I sentence him to 15 years in jail,” Njagi stated in his ruling
