This process will start on Thursday, January 24, 2019.

According to the authority, the applicants are required to book an appointment through their Transport Information Management System (TIMS) account which is a self–service portal on the website.

Applicants have however, been warned against sharing or disclosing their details to unauthorized persons while logging into their TIMS accounts.

The process was rolled out in March last year by the government after carrying out a successful test on its applicability.

The licenses will have electronic chips that will contain all the details of drivers including names, blood type and biometric information.

The card will also record the offenses committed by the driver.

Each card will carry 100 points which will be deducted whenever the driver commits an offense, if the driver commits up to the threshold of 40 points, the license will automatically be revoked.

The smart driving license will cost Ksh. 3000 and will remain valid for only three years after which the driver will apply for a new license. All drivers are expected to have the new smart license by January 2021.
