Auditor General Edward Ouko has raised concern after some members of Parliament pocketed Sh.5milion allowances during a conference held in Kisumu.
Ouko has now asked the lawmakers to refund the said amount with immediate effect. According to Ouko, the legislators received the amount illegally.
In his latest report for 2017/18 financial year, Ouko has said that the payments were advanced against the declaration from the Office of the President.
Ouko said that the allowances are supposed to be extended by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).
He said that agencies and state departments are not allowed to pay allowances to the lawmakers. He has also accused the commission leadership of going against the requirements of the government.
He asked the commission to act responsibly as far as such allowances are concerned. Ouko made the revelations through a report he tabled in Parliament.
“During the year under review, the commission paid some MPs Sh5,024,500 while attending a stakeholders’ consultative conference organised by the commission in Kisumu in January 2018,” reads the report, as quoted by Standard.
Ouko said that there is no way a ministry will invite lawmakers and then parliament is asked to pay them.
According to the commission, the payments were extended following approval from the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly.
