The casket bearing Qassem's body was wrapped with Iranian flag and unloaded from a plane as a military band played.

This comes just a day after an angry funeral procession was held in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq where the powerful military commander was taken out in the middle of the night.

Iran has vowed to retaliate fiercely for the death of a man widely seen as the architect of the country's secretive operations in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to the Iranians, saying that any attempt to avenge the death of their commander would be answered using sophisticated military equipment.

"The United States just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World! If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way...and without hesitation!" President Trump tweeted.

Soleimani was killed alongside Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy leader of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF).
