This is after a 'blob' was captured in the radar of the national command.

It was established that the blob on the radar was indeed an unauthorised aircraft that had entered Washington DC's airspace.

Fighter jets were scrambled to deal with what was thought to be a threat according to media reports even though authorities denied fighter jets were called in.

The Pentagon spokesman Chris Mitchel told members of the press that the unauthorised aircraft was found not to pose a serious threat even as an interagency team closely monitored the situation.

"Senior officials across the interagency are monitoring the situation on a national event conference call. NORAD aircraft are on site and responding. Plane is not considered hostile at this time," Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Chris Mitchell said according to Cable News Network (CNN).

Following the 9/11 attacks that saw planes crash into the World Trade Centre, the US has taken strict measures that allow only authorised aircraft to access Washington DC's airspace.

According to the Washington Post, a secret service spokesman said that the lockdown was triggered  "due to a potential violation of the restricted airspace in the National Capital Region.

Later on, officials said that it was not clear what triggered the lockdown in the first place.

The North American Aerospace Defence Command said that it had responded to an event which was resolved without incident.
