Kenya's veteran Judge Philip Waki retired last week after distinguished service of over four decades in the country's judiciary, it has emerged.
Justice Waki, a cousin to late Senior Counsel Mutula Kilonzo, is better remembered for the role he played during the enquiry for post election violence in 2008.
Having been appointed to chair the commission, Waki investigated circumstances behind the skirmishes and handed over findings to former UN Secretary General Dr Kofi Annan, who has since died.
Former International Criminal Court prosecutor Moreno Ocampo opened the famous Waki Envelope before naming six individuals allegedly responsible for violence.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP William Ruto, Joshua Sang, Francis Muthaura, Major General Hussein Ali and Henry Kosgey were named as perpetrators.
All those indicted in the Waki report went on to be successfully cleared by The Hague based court. Uhuru and Ruto had faced pressure to quit in 2013 race due to the cases.
Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi lauded Waki's contributions to the judiciary. He urged Law Society of Kenya to honour him.
"Last week the Hon Justice Philip Waki of the Court of Appeal retired from the Judiciary. He retired an honourable man.
"He offered distinguished service. He was a man of impeccable integrity. @lawsocietykenya needs to organise a luncheon or dinner to wish him well," he said.
Waki also served along with Mutula Kilonzo as personal lawyers to retired President Daniel Moi. He was also appointed to serve in Sierra Leone.
Justice Alnashir Visram of the Court of Appeal also retired from the Judiciary. At one point, Kibaki wanted him for Chief Justice job.
