Before he stood to speak, a number of local leaders piled pressure on him to declare interest in 2022 succession race, arguing that he's fit to lead.

Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae insisted that Dr Matiang'i had all it takes to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, adding that Mr Odinga's support is paramount.

"Prime Minister this young man is doing well. It will be prudent to ysve him succeed in 2022. I believe that you have him in your mind," Nyagarama said.

But when he spoke, Matiang'i who had also come to represent President Uhuru Kenyatta, steered clearly off the politics of the day, only insisting his urge to develop the region.

However, to cool down several politicians who had also requested Mr Odinga to back him, Dr Matiang'i said he declare 'what they want at the right time'.

"I know what you want me to declare today. However, I will not do that. I shall do it when the right time comes. For now, let's help in building the country," he said.

Mr Odinga, who was visibly happy, said that he understands what the leaders wanted, adding that they should go slow and allow the minister to work first.

The powerful minister will be the third Kisii to contest should he join the race and the second ever from Nyamira. George Anyona tried in 1992 and 1997. Simeon Nyachae finished third in 2002.
