According to Cynthia Cobb, DNP, APRN, a nurse practitioner specializing in women's health, aesthetics, cosmetics, and skincare, here are the underlying causes of dark elbows and knees.

1. An accumulation of dead skin

Dead skin cells accumulation could be the reason behind this condition. These cells normally develop due to many reasons.

They are associated with kidney failure, thyroid disease and taking some medications. After developing, they normally form scales on the body that are dark in colour.

2. Hyperpigmentation increased by skin exposure.

The rays from the sun have scorching effects. They simply damage the skin in one way or another. The elbows and knees are the most affected areas since most people don't give them much attention and care. People will focus on applying sunscreen on their body parts but forget to dab on their knees or elbows.

 3. Birth controls

Contraceptives have devastating effects and you are all aware of it.  They can cause dark knees and elbows. You should blame the pills and yourself for these conditions.

 4. Certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

They also lead to the condition. If you have been experiencing them, you are likely to have dark elbows and knees

It usually important to prevent a condition thus curing it. We would only advise you to wear sunscreen if your elbows and knees are exposed to the sun. This is the best measure to employ.
