The CS is not new to such endorsements, and has repeatedly been called upon to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta, who is expected to retire after the 2022 polls.

On Saturday, he attended a funeral service in Naromoru, Nyeri County, where a section of the present leaders called upon him to organise the region ahead of the 2022 polls.

Laikipia West Member of Parliament Patrick Mariru said the region will not agree to arrive in 2022 divided as is currently the case, proposing that Kiunjuri unites the region.

"We wont accept to be arranged in Central Kenya. Honorable Kiunjuri, organise us so that we can proceed in an organised manner, you are our driver (Hatutakubali kupangwa katika Central Kenya, we shall not accept. Mheshimiwa Kiunjuri, organise us, tupange vizuri tuelekee vizuri, wewe derewa witu)," he said.

However, Kiunjuri, also a politician, ignored the calls when he took to the podium to address the public, and avoided responding to the remarks.

Other leaders called for a match out of the ruling Jubilee Party, where members currently appear divided over support for President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

However, Kieni MP Kanini Kega opposed the suggestion, observing that Jubilee belongs to the region and therefore, there will be no exodus from the party.

"Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta has himself told us that we are in Jubilee Party and that's our party. We can't leave our house. (Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta yeye mwenyewe ametuambia na tuko kwa chama ya Jubilee, hiyo ni chama yetu. Hatuwezi toka kwa nyumba yetu tuende)," he added.
