Marathoner Eliud Kipchoge with other star athletes have now been tasked to rally for Kenya's bid to get a seat on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) which enters a crucial stage in New York on Wednesday this week.
Kipchoge who recently made history in Vienna, Austria for running a full marathon in under two hours will accompany Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma to New York together with world female marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, legendary long-distance runner Tegla Loroupe, Paul Tergat and rugby player Collins Injera.
Kenya will be competing for the position with Djibouti.
According to CS Juma, Kenya is confident it will get the seat because they have already been 'blessed' by the African Union.
''We have come a long way, from getting an endorsement from the African Union through a vote in August to rallying associates to support our bid,” the CS said as quoted by Nation.
She further added that their early campaigns are to sensitize Kenyans on the importance of the position, as this will increase the opportunities our country will get globally.
“Launching this campaign in New York, the headquarters of the Security Council, six months shy of the vote means that we need all Kenyans to support the country's bid because we stand to gain a lot if we get an opportunity at this top global security decision-making level,” Juma noted.
Tea brand Ketepa and the alcoholic beverage Tusker are also in New York campaigning for Kenya.
