The parents, who according to The Standard requested for anonymity, claimed the school had asked students to pay an additional Sh960 for bread each term.

Students who had failed to pay the Sh960 were reported to have been sent home last week. Some of the students have reportedly not resumed their studies.

The parents also pointed out that the school had not informed them before coming up with the said fee which they believe is too high.

“We feel that students should not be sent home for such things, and the Ministry of Education should intervene and help us,” one of the parents said.

Public secondary school administrations were however warned last year by the Regional Education coordinator Mary Gaturu against coming up with illegal levies or increasing the school fees.

“The government has allocated Sh22,244 to every student enrolled in public schools. Parents of those admitted in boarding schools will only top up a little fee to cater for accommodation and meals. Adding extra levies will amount to corruption and such cases will be monitored,” Gaturu stated as quoted by The Standard.
