Nominated MP David Ole Sankok has made a sudden climb down days after he said single mothers should not be nominated to Parliament.
While contributing to the ongoing debate on Gender Bill, the Jubilee legislator had argued unmarried women with children from different fathers lacked integrity and therefore were unfit to lead.
But on Wednesday, the first-time MP, who had been on the receiving end from women groups, expressed remorse and issued an apology in a live television to all those who felt offended by his statement.
"I apologise from the bottom of my heart for the statements I made that may have hurt women especially single mothers whom I respect. My intention was to safeguard the nomination process so that it is not abused as before. I sincerely apologise, " he said during Day Break show on Citizen TV.
Appearing on the same show, former Nyeri Women Representative Priscilla Nyokabi lauded Sankok for withdrawing his remarks and urged him to always choose his words carefully when addressing women.
"We hardly apologise as leaders, it is very rare to find a leader who accepts he or she went wrong. Some sentiments made in Parliament hurt women, " Nyokabi said.
This is not the first time Sankok has found himself in trouble over his loose tongue as a few months ago he received massive bashing from the supporters of ODM leader Raila Odinga after he said VAT on fuel was necessary to fund the former Prime Minister's trips abroad since he had become an 'international mourner'.
