At least four people including a woman and a child were left dead after a saloon car reversed and fell off a moving ferry into the Indian ocean in Likoni on Sunday evening.
Commuters watched helplessly as the car sunk into the ocean.
Witnesses recounted that a woman tried to shout for help while banging the windshield of the car from inside but there was nothing that could be done.
There were neither divers nor emergency teams who could help in the rescue mission when the incident occurred.
Kenya Ferry Services managing director Bakari Gowa claimed that a woman and her child were inside the car.
"As the ferry was moving, the driver reversed the vehicle and slipped backwards," Gowa said.
He added that relevant authorities including the Kenya Navy have been alerted.
"We have already alerted the Kenya Navy and Kenya Ports Authority. Rescue operations will begin any time," Gowa noted.
Likoni OCPD Benjamin Rotich, on the other hand, indicated that there were four people inside the car which was being driven by a woman.
