Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has cautioned Deputy President (DP) William Ruto's camp against opposing a referendum generated from the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
He said BBI, which was formed following his March 9, 2018 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta, was writing a report which will be made public next month, and warned the Tangatanga group of a disastrous political storm should they dare to shoot down a referendum proposed by the BBI.
“There are very good views from Kenyans and once the report is out, we will publish it for Kenyans to give their views then go for a referendum. I have seen a storm, there are signs that it will rain. There’s is a storm that will take all the Tanga Tanga people to the ocean,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
Raila spoke on Sunday when he unveiled 24 aspirants seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s ticket in the upcoming Kibra by-election.
In a apparent reference to Thirdway Alliance's Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019, the former Premier urged Kenyans to reject it and rally behind the BBI.
"Those bringing other initiatives should be ignored,” Raila added.
The remarks comes at a time allies of the DP have vowed to shoot down the BBI report on grounds it is unconstitutional and does not represent views of majority of Kenyans.
“They (BBI) were acting on behalf of two people. They were serving the interests of Kenyatta and Odinga and their report does not represent the views of Kenyans," Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa said recently.
