A man was shot dead on Tuesday during a scuffle that involved Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa and supporters of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Ganda, Malindi County.
Citizen TV reported that the incident happened at the home of Reuben Katana who is an ODM candidate in the Ganda Ward by-election.
Katana is reported to have been in a meeting together with other leaders and ODM agents when Aisha Jumwa and her supporters showed up. The meeting was allegedly aimed at planning on how the ODM agents would work during the by-election.
Jumwa allegedly questioned why such a meeting was being held yet the campaign period had ended on Monday as it was declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The ODM officials nonetheless claimed the meeting was meant to train the agents on how they will handle the by-election.
Police Officers were later on deployed to provide security after it was clarified that the meeting was not aimed at campaigning.
Aisha Jumwa and her supporters are however alleged to have forced themselves into the home. Police officers used teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.
"Ms Jumwa who looked angry forced herself to the home despite police blocking her from the private meeting," one supporter said as quoted by Nation.
It is during the chaos that the man who is believed to be an uncle to ODM candidate Katana was shot dead.
Malindi sub-county Police Commander Phillip Wambugu confirmed the incident and added that investigation into the case had commenced.
