Renowned city lawyer and socio-political commentator Donald Kipkorir has weighed in on the controversy that has been stirred by the release of the 2019 provisional census results.
Writing on Twitter on Wednesday, the lawyer called on governors contesting the results to give figures that they think capture the real population in their respective counties.
"'As most Governors are insinuating Counties pop as given by KNBS is fake & that therefore our pop is more than 47m, let each Governor give us what they think their pop is .. Central Gov’t can work with KNBS Count & County Governments with their own estimations. Each to its own!" Donald Kipkorir's tweet read.
President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the national population stood at 47 million people and called on the county governments to work with the figures given to planning for development.
Tharaka Nithi county boss Muthomi Njuki is among the governors who have rubbished the census results as announced by the government.
“We are disappointed with the figures we have received. The rate of increase is inconsistent with what is obtained for the rest of the country. If the Cabinet Secretary for Planning and KNBS (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics) do not review the results, we shall be compelled to move to the High Court seeking orders to compel them to cancel the results and repeat the exercise,” Njuki said as quoted by the Standard.
He said that the figures underestimated the population of Tharaka Nithi and vowed to go to court to contest the results.
