Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga has warned politicians against inciting Kenyans to hate others in the course of political campaigns.
In yet another scathing attack targeting Deputy President William Ruto, Mr Odinga warned that Kenyans cannot be threatened against debating what matters.
In the last few months, Dr Ruto has been accusing Mr Odinga of pushing for constitutional changes, a move that could lead to change of government system in Kenya.
Mr Odinga, who was addressing hundreds of people at University of Nairobi on Tuesday, accused Dr Ruto's team of allegedly instilling fear among Kenyans albeit indirectly.
"They require structured debate without fear. Unfortunately, such efforts like this by governor Nyongo and the BBI are being hindered by the culture of hatred for debate and preference for fear and fear-mongering.
"Debate is the tested way to ensure politics of reason overcomes the politics of fear, whose result often is hatred and division, which, unfortunately, is getting mainstreamed in this country," he said.
He said each side of political divide should embrace debate without necessarily going antagonistic against each other in the push for fundamental changes.
"As a country, let us not threaten our citizens against debating their future. We must guard against fear-mongering and embrace any effort that encourages debate about our current state and our future. This book is one such effort, as is the BBI."
While Mr Odinga insists that the report by Building Bridges Initiative will heal the country from past electoral injustices, Dr Ruto maintains that it's an avenue to expand the executive.
