According to Samuel Toroitich, who was then a prison warder at Kamiti Maximum Prison between 1952 and 1957,the colonialists were scared by Kimathi's presence.

The freedom fighter was executed by the British on February 18,1957 and they kept tight security in the gravesite for three months fearing that Kimathi might resurrect.

Toroitich was assigned alongside other guards to man the unmarked gravesite.

“Colonialists could not believe that the former freedom fighter was actually dead and we were ordered to man the graveside for three months as they feared that he might come back to life,” he said.

Kimathi was sentenced to death for unlawfully found in  possession of a firearm and ammunition which went against regulation 8A (1) of the Emergency Regulation in 1952.

The government on Friday successfully identified the grave-site of freedom fighter Kimathi Waciuri at the Kamiti Maximum Prison barely a week after his widow appealed.

Evelyn Wanjugu Kimathi, the CEO of an organization by his name, said that they are waiting a go ahead from Chief Justice David Maraga so that Kimathi's remains can be exhumed and buried decently.

Kimathi is remembered to have played a big role in the build up to Kenya's independence.
