Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced the leasing of land near the Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD). The piece of land is expected to be used as a yard for trucks.
The creation of the space will pave way for the rollout of the booking system as the government unveils booking system for the collection of containers.
Confirming the new plan, ICD Principal Operations Officer Nicholas Tendwa has said that there are plans to lease the land with the aim of easing congestion and eliminating of the idle trucks.
The trucks will not be waiting to be collected at the CID offices upon the unveiling of the space. The land set aside is expected to accommodate 200 trucks at the same time upon completion.
“There are two parcels of land that have been earmarked but we are looking at the option of leasing,” he said, as quoted by the Standard.
“This land is meant for truck marshalling areas so that as we introduce the truck booking system we give our customers or the trucking companies a place to wait before they come into the depot,” Mr Tendwa said.
Tendwa also said that the trucks will now be expected to arrive at the port only when they want to be cleared. The KPA is also planning to allow capacity for hauling at least 40 per cent of cargo from Mombasa port on the Standard Gauge Railway.
