In an internal memo, the students directed to clear the university premises by 7:30pm.

"Following unrest by Students over alleged rape cases reported to have occured in off-campus student residences and failure by the students to engage university management in structured discussion. On the same Senate sat down on 1st December at 7pm and resolved to close the university with immediate effect until further notice,"  part of the memo read.

The memo was released by Prof Julius Nyabundi the vice Chancellor.

The two students held protests after several students were raped while others were injured on different occasions in the past week with the latest incident happening on Saturday evening.

However, in a statement released by Nyanza region police boss, the students might have staged the allegation as a way of not sitting for exams.

"The riots could have been managed by a section of students not prepared for the ongoing exams." Said Vincent Makokha.

Maseno University becomes the latest institution to close after student unrest. Similar cases have been witnessed in Jkuat, Kenyatta University and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

The students later took it to social media with #MasenoLivesmatters to call for government attention over the rampant cases of insecurity.
